Back in the fall of 1988, I started my freshman year at the University of Maryland at College Park with a clear goal: I wanted to join a fraternity. As I navigated the whirlwind of rush week, I found myself instinctively taking notes. The entire process, from the initial meet-and-greets to the eventual initiation, felt so rich with potential that I thought it would make for a compelling short story.
